Ashraful Islam – Digital Marketing Consultant in Malaysia
I help businesses grow with SEO, Google Business Profile optimization, and Facebook ads. Focused on driving more traffic, leads, and real customers through proven digital marketing strategies.

To rank higher on Google Maps, you improve three things: how well your profile matches the search, how close you are to the customer and how trusted your business looks online. You cannot buy a place in the map results. You earn it.
This matters because the map results appear above the normal website results. Customers often call the first business they see. So a higher spot means more calls, more visits and more enquiries.
I’m Ashraful Islam, a digital marketing consultant in PJ and Subang Jaya. I help SMEs across the Klang Valley improve their local SEO visibility with simple, steady steps. This guide explains what works.

Google decides using three signals: relevance, distance and prominence. Google states these signals on its own help page, How to improve your local ranking on Google.
Here is a simple example. Two aircond service companies sit in USJ. A customer searches from SS15. Google looks at which profile matches “aircond service” best, which one is closer and which one has stronger trust signals. The higher score wins the top spot.
You control most of the ranking work. The table below shows what to do for each factor.
| Signal | What Google looks at | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | Categories, services, description, website content | Pick the right primary category, list every service and write clear pages |
| Distance | Searcher location versus your address | Nothing to change. Choose accurate service areas and keep your address correct |
| Prominence | Reviews, ratings, links, mentions, brand searches | Earn honest reviews, get trusted local links and keep your details consistent |
| Activity | Photos, posts, updated details | Add photos and post weekly |
| Website | Content, speed, mobile display | Build clear service pages and improve speed |
Follow these seven steps in order. Each one builds on the one before. If you prefer expert help, my Google Maps SEO service covers all of them.
Fill in every field. Add your services, hours, service areas and a clear description. If you need help, use my full guide on Google Business Profile optimization or see my Google Business Profile optimization service.
Your primary category has the biggest effect on relevance. Choose the one that best describes your main business. Then add a few extra categories for other services. Do not add categories that do not fit.
Reviews help both customers and Google. Ask every customer. Make it easy by sending your review link on WhatsApp. Reply to each review. Also ask customers to mention the service they used. Never buy reviews.
Your website supports your map ranking. Create one page for each service. Add your service areas, real photos and clear contact options. A strong on-page SEO setup helps Google understand each page. Make the site fast on mobile, and use local business schema markup so Google can read your details. If speed or schema is a problem, a technical SEO service can fix it. Not sure where your site stands? Start with an SEO audit.
Use the same details on your website, Facebook, LinkedIn and local directories. Small differences confuse Google. This includes spelling, abbreviations and unit numbers.
Get listed on trusted Malaysian directories and industry sites. Join local business groups and chambers if they suit you. Sponsor a local event or partner with nearby businesses. Local mentions raise your prominence.
Post an update every week. Add real photos each month. This shows customers that you are open and active. It also keeps your profile fresh.
Your position changes with the searcher’s location, so a business can rank well in one area and poorly in another. The Klang Valley has many dense areas that make this obvious.
Think about how people move. Someone works near Sunway Pyramid, lives in Puchong and shops at 1 Utama or Paradigm Mall. They travel on the LDP, NKVE, KESAS or the Federal Highway. They may search from any of these places. So your customers do not sit in one spot.
This is why service areas matter. Name the areas you truly serve, such as Subang Jaya and Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya, Puchong, Shah Alam and Kuala Lumpur. Build content around them only where you have real work to show.
Also track your rank from several spots, not one. Tools such as Local Falcon and BrightLocal show a grid of rankings across an area. This shows where you are strong and where you need to grow.
The biggest mistakes are keyword stuffing, fake reviews, wrong categories and inconsistent details. Google can filter or suspend profiles that break its rules. Read Google’s guidelines for representing your business on Google to stay safe.
Avoid these:
Most businesses see early changes in a few weeks. Bigger gains often build over three to six months. The time depends on your competition, your review count and your area.
Busy areas such as Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya and Puchong usually take longer, because many similar businesses compete. No honest consultant can guarantee a top-three spot. You can see what steady work looks like in my results and case studies.
Track calls, website clicks and direction requests in your Google Business Profile Performance report. Then compare them each month. Ranking on its own does not pay the bills. Enquiries do.
Also check these:
Focus on relevance and prominence. Choose the right category, complete your profile, earn reviews and build a helpful website. Then track your progress over time.
Yes. Reviews affect trust and prominence. Quality, quantity and recent activity all matter. Honest replies also help customers.
Yes. Google uses information from your website to understand your business. Clear service pages and local details help. You can also read my guide on SEO for small businesses in Malaysia.
Yes, if you are a service-area business that visits customers. Set your service areas and hide your address if needed.
Google uses the searcher’s location. So the same search gives different results in Bandar Sunway, Puchong or Shah Alam.
Start with the seven steps above. If you want an expert to build and track a local plan, I can help. I work with SMEs in Subang Jaya and Bandar Sunway, PJ, Puchong, Shah Alam, Klang and Kuala Lumpur, and across the wider Klang Valley.
